5 Story Crafting Elements That Every Newbie Writer Should Learn!

Writing a story as a newbie writer can be a bit tough. This is because writing a story is more than just putting sentences together. To truly write a story, you will need to be able to narrate the events and the characters of the story in such a cohesive way that you will be able to draw readers into your narrative.

So if you want to learn how to truly write a story, you will need to have a strategy and you will need to know the key components of story writing.

Here are 5 story crafting elements that every newbie writer should be aware of:

  1. Setting

If you want to create a truly immersive and multifaceted story, then you should take the time to create a fitting setting for your story. The setting is the physical and social environment of your story. It is where the story takes place.

And if you write your setting well, it can enhance the entire reading experience. One way to enhance your setting and making it seem more realistic, is to have your characters truly interact with the setting.  Have your characters interact with their surroundings.

Have them climb a tree, stumble on a stool or swim in a river. This interaction not only makes full use of the setting, it also pulls readers further into your story. Your setting also includes the sociological and historical aspects.

Where is the story taking place? What is the culture of this place? What language is used there? Is it a friendly place or is it a hostile one? All in all, when you write your settings, the details are always key.

  1. Characters

Your characters are an extremely important aspect of the story writing process. This is because your readers will experience your story through your characters. And if your characters are boring or lack personality, then your readers will most likely lose interest quickly.

So if you want to create a truly compelling story, then you should do your best to make your characters compelling as well. When writing your characters, you should also give them distinct personalities and backstories. This will make them easier to distinguish from each other.

  1. Conflict

If there is one aspect of a story you should never take for granted it is the conflict. This is because the conflict is one of the key elements that moves a story forward. Without conflict, your story will cease being a story.

Conflict is what motivates your characters to do the things they do. Conflict is what puts weight to each event and what captures the reader’s attention. All in all, the conflict is the main driving force of your story, so it should be as compelling and realistic as possible.

  1. Realism

Whether you are writing a drama or a science fiction book, realism is still very important. This is because, if you make your story too farfetched, then your readers won’t take it seriously. So if you are writing your story, make sure that you don’t go over the top.

Don’t put your characters into unbelievable and unexplainable situations.  When you create characters try basing them off people in your life. This will make them feel more real and relatable.

You should also try to make your dialogues sound more authentic. Like the way people would normally speak. All in all, the more realistic your story, the more interesting and believable your writing will be.

  1. Closure

If you don’t want to annoy or anger your readers, it is important to give your stories closure. It is important because closure is the resolution of the main problem or conflict. And if you don’t give your readers a satisfying ending or tie up loose ends, you would be denying your readers the closure they deserve.

This would understandably leave your readers with a sense of unfinished business and would likely bother them to no end. So when you are writing the end of your story, always make sure that you give a satisfying and complete ending.
