If there is one thing that commonly haunts writers at a consistent level, it is writers block. But what is writer’s block? It is simply defined as the condition of being unable to think of what to write or continue a writing project. And the worst part is that there is no way of guessing how long it will last.
There are times that writer’s block can last for only a few days, and there will be times that it will last for years on end. And if you are writing a book or doing a long term writing project, then you are in for a rough ride. But don’t worry, writer’s block does not really have to be the end of your writing career. All you really need is a foolproof strategy.
Here are 6 highly effective ways to fight writer’s block:
- Relax and take things easy
Although there are no identified reasons for writer’s block, it can usually be attributed to stress. So if you are suffering from writer’s block, it is always a good idea to step away from the writing process. It does not really matter what you are writing.
You can be writing a book or a very long article. But should you feel writer’s block setting in, you should step away from the writing process and relax. Take things easy for a few days. If you are lucky, the writer’s block could just be due to stress and will dissipate once you relax a little.
- Take up a hobby or a sport
Sometimes writer’s block could be caused by a loss of interest in the writing process. For example, you are tasked with writing a book and there is a lot of pressure and your work is receiving a lot of negative criticism. This would of course be quite discouraging and you would understandably lose interest in the writing process.
But because of the deadline involved you are forced to power through despite your writer’s block. Sadly, trying to power through a writer’s block is not really a good idea. In truth, it would more likely worsen your writer’s block.
Which is why you should do another activity that will help you take your mind off the writing process. Try to take up a hobby or a sport. In truth, it can be anything, just as long as it gets your mind off the writing process.
- Change your routine
Your writer’s block could also stem from your daily routine. Although having a routine is a good way to keep track of the writing process, following It for too long can make the writing process too monotonous and cause the author to lose interest in the writing process.
So should you feel writer’s block coming in, try to change your routine. This may just be what you need to get the cobwebs out of your system.
- Talk to someone about it
Although there is no foolproof writer’s block cure, there are some ways that you can lessen it. One way is to talk to someone about your problem. Writer’s block, although not severe is still a mental problem.
And like any problem of its kind it is always a good idea to talk about it. You can talk to family and friends about your problem, but if you want to get even more in-depth about the problem, you should also approach fellow authors for advice. They would most likely have experienced writer’s block and know how to help you in fighting it.
- Get some exercise
Being a writer, you would most likely be expected to do most of your work sitting down in front of your laptop. But this kind of sedentary lifestyle can lead to an unhealthy physical state that can affect your work. This could also lead to writer’s block in the long run.
Which is why it is important that you lead a healthy lifestyle and have a regular exercise regimen. Not only is this a great way to stay healthy, it is also a great way to get the kinks out of your system.
- Ease up on the pressure
Being a writer can be a stressful job, because there is always a lot of pressure to do great work. And although pressure can be a good thing in small doses, it can prove toxic if it becomes part of your daily writing routine.
So it is always a good idea to ease up on the pressure. Remember that there is really no guarantee that your work will be a success, so stop worrying so much and enjoy the writing process.
