Ten Reasons Why Authors Need to Self-Publish Their Books

By Michael Spelling

Life today isn’t just the same as the old days. There were things perceived differently years ago that people today may have already accepted and understood. There were absolutely the same issues or topics discussed yesterday, where opinions expressed could vary.Publishing a book is just among them. And while the traditional publishing way of a book has been considered alegendary, the evolution of self-publishing continues to be famous among writers today.

So, here are ten reasons as to why these authors are easily convinced to publish their books independently.

1. It’s cheaper to self-publish

When you decide to publish your book using your own effort and other resources, then you surely know how this way has become more cost-effective. You have an ample of options to choose from, a lot of possibilities to grab, and more publishing products to pick. As a whole, you take control of your costs. Whether you choose to invest more in the publication of your book, or look for places which can publish your book at lesser prices, you take control of your money and it is up to you to choose the services that you can afford.

2. Complete control of your story and platform

One instance to point out is this: When you choose the traditional publishing way to publish your book and you will be lucky enough to sign a contract as soon as possible, what will likely happen is that an editor will likely ask you to change some content of your book. When you choose to self-publish your book, you can hire an editor to do the furnishing of your manuscript and you can decide what to change and what not to alter on your book.

3. Expertise

The moment you decide to write a book is the perfect time of your declaration of your confidence about the subject matter you choose to pen down. In that case, you actually show confidence to get your book published. You become ready in publishing your book by your own because you are confident about the content of your work and ready to share it to the world.

4. Fortune and Fame

Your fortune depends on what kind of decisions you make in life. And in writing a book, you have the options to publish your work the traditional way or independently. Whatever decision you make, take note that doing the right thing at the right time can lead you to both fame and fortune.

Amanda Hocking, E.L. James, James Redfield, and more self-published authors have made millions and become famous by doing the independent publishing. Self-publishing your book can bring your story farther—to fortune and fame.

5. You become a manager

When you choose to self-publish your book, you’ve got the complete freedom to choose who to work with and what services necessary in the process of letting your book be out—final decisions are always yours. That’s how self-publishing works: you become a boss and make decisions for your book, yet you are working in a team of different talents, who can be great contributors in making your book most ready and marketable.

6. Higher royalties

You are typically paid an advance payment and a pre-determined royalty on book sales as compensation by major publishing companies when you decide to do the traditional way of publishing your manuscript. This enables you to receive a 25%-50% for each sold copy of your book.

Self-publishing does a different way as you can earn up to 100% of your book’s cover price. Most independent publishing companies offer higher royalties; some do offer 100% royalties. This gives you higher edge when you choose to self-publish your book.

7. Clear Timeline

Self-publishing your book doesn’t give you a guessing game as to the timeline of the entire process. No need to wait for years before you can see your book officially published as it may only take a few months before your book can be ready for purchase online and offline. And since you become the manager of the entire process, you only need to have a timeline on the steps and platforms you want for your book—from copyediting, formatting, design, and up to making an official website for yourself and your book that will serve as your online bookstore.

Choosing the self-publishing way will give you a clear timeline on what particular step or platform that needs to be done for a specific time since you are in control of the entire process.

8. Right Timing

Do you imagine yourself keeping your manuscript for years and waiting for the right time for it to be published? Today, a lot of aspiring writers come out and get famous. There are even some who continuously and consistently stay on the top 10 list of top sellers self-publishing authors in prestigious magazines and journals. More aspiring authors yesterday have stepped forward and are now earning millions by having their books published independently.

Today is the right time for all aspiring authors to come up and be part of the evolving group of self-published authors, who are achieving fame so easily.

9. A relic of your existence

Who doesn’t want to be remembered as a great individual? People are following different paths in life and are trying to leave footsteps where they can be remembered by those who are following their ways. According to a survey conducted by promoters.com, authors write books for a variety of reasons: 11% to educate, 6% to influence, 15% to express themselves, 8% to pen down their imagination, 13% write because they have to, and 13% do in order to help others.

Therefore, it is safe to say that writers do write to be remembered. Anyone wishes to influence others in many different ways. For you to choose of self-publishing your book is your own big decision to make to accomplish whatever reasons you have in mind in less time.

10. You have confidence to do it.

You choose to self-publish because you are confident that your book is ready to be out. Why wait for tomorrow when you can do it today?

Since you know you have the complete control over the entire process of publishing your book independently, you know exactly when your book is ready for purchase. The confidence in yourself and in your book as the product of your ingenuity is a great motivating tool that would surely open the door of more opportunities that await you when you would rather trust yourself to become a published author as early as possible.

Whatever ways you would rather choose to be heard, it doesn’t eradicate the fact that you are already there, ready. Self-publishing does cost you more money in trying to purchase the services you think are best for your book to sell more in the future. But what doesn’t cost any money today? Even your hobbies and favorite things to do in life do.

If writing is your passion, then there’s no need to discuss all the other “Ifs.” You should decide as early now.
