6 Great Novel Writing Tips for Beginner Writers!

By Michael Spelling

novel writing tips for beginners

Starting out as a writer can be a very intimidating thing. Being a full time writer is a very convoluted and intense undertaking. And it takes a great degree or hard work and commitment in order to do it right.

This is especially true if you are planning on writing a novel of your very own. This is because, writing a novel can be very stressful, and there are so many potential mistakes that you can make, if you don’t do it right. Which is why you will need a good strategy.

Here are 6 great novel writing tips for beginner writers:

  1. Write about something that you care about

When choosing a topic to write about, it is important that you choose one that you really care about. Don’t choose a topic just because it is trending or popular right now. If there’s one thing you should know about trends, it is that they change pretty fast.

So when you choose a topic, choose one that you truly care about. Choose a topic that you would not mind talking about for hours on end. Remember that the novel writing process can take a very long time.

So it always pays that you actually care about your chosen topic.

  1. Know who you are writing for

Aside from writing about something that you care about, it is also important that you know who you are writing for. This means that you should know your target market. By knowing your target market, you will be able to make your writing a whole lot more focused and tailored to the tastes of your target market.

This will not only make it easier for you to market your book, but it will also make your book more enjoyable to read in the long run.

  1. Do your research properly

Although novels are not as reliant on facts compared to non-fiction books it still pays that you do your research properly. It would be embarrassing if you wrote a novel on Greek myths, only to be called out on a particular fact by fans. This is not only embarrassing, but can also damage your overall reputation as a writer.

So before you even start writing your novel, you should already have a stack of facts that you can review throughout the entire writing process.

  1. Avoid clichés

If there is one thing you should avoid when writing a novel, it is clichés. This is because clichés are concepts and themes that have been used so many times that they are no longer unique. And because of these readers usually look down on writers who use clichés.

So if you don’t want to be labeled as a lazy or boring writer, you should really avoid clichés altogether.

  1. Make your characters as interesting as possible

When writing your novel, you should always remember to make your characters as interesting as possible. This is because your characters are the main focal point of your story. So it is imperative that your characters are as likeable and relatable as possible.

When writing your characters, you should make them multifaceted and unique. Never make disposable characters. Give your characters unique traits that will make them easy to remember. You should also give your character quirks and idiosyncrasies. These quirks and idiosyncrasies are a great way to add a certain flair and charm to your characters. You should also avoid making your characters too perfect, because readers won’t be able to relate to them. Remember that nobody is perfect, so if you are going to write a character make sure that they are realistic and relatable.

  1. Give it everything you’ve got

As it was stated earlier, writing a novel can be pretty taxing. Not only are you expected to invest a great deal of your time and effort to the writing process, you are also expected to compete with a multitude of other writers. All in all, writing a novel can be an uphill battle from the very beginning.

Which is why you should give it everything you’ve got. Don’t go into the writing process with second thoughts or doubts. If you want to write a novel of your very own, you should be willing to make sacrifices and put in the time and effort needed to make your dream a reality.
