By learning these writing styles, you will make your writing more effective and polished. You will also be able to cultivate your very own writing style in the long run.

But which writing style is the best for you? Here is a short introduction to the 4 types of writing styles and how to effectively use them.

  1. Expository Writing

Expository writing is used to inform readers of specific information and facts. It is perfect for students, journalists or anyone who wants to share facts and information in a highly detailed manner.

Expository Writing Tips

  • Approach the writing process without any bias or preconceived notions. Remember that expository writing is all about sharing facts. So keep your opinions to yourself.
  • Make sure that your work is well researched and supported by ample facts.
  • Provide footnotes and links to your sources.
  • Write as clearly as possible. Expository writing is not about showing off your writing skills. The facts are the highlight of your writing. So highlight them.
  1. Descriptive Writing

Descriptive writing is all about using the five senses to create a vivid reading experience. This writing style is usually used when you want to describe people, places, objects and events through detailed writing.

Descriptive Writing Tips

  • Write with your reader in mind. Descriptive writing is all about reaching your readers with your writing. So try to write in a way that you can create a rapport with your audience.
  • Be as detail oriented as possible. The more detail in your writing, the more effective it will be to reach your readers.
  • Use all your senses when you write. This will create a true sensory experience for your readers.

Narrative writing is technically telling a story. It is usually used during longer writing projects such as when you are writing a novel, novella, poems or any long term writing project.

Narrative Writing Tips

  • Have a cohesive outline. Map out your settings, storyline, conflicts and characters. This will allow you to keep track and make sense of the entire writing process.
  • Be as detail oriented as possible. This will not only add a certain panache to your writing, it will also help you to translate your story to your readers.
  • Write with emotion. One of the defining characteristics of narrative writing is its ability to draw emotion from readers. So try to infuse as much emotion into your writing as possible.
  • Make your characters as interesting as possible. When it comes to narrative writing characters are key because they are mostly the focal point of your story. So try to make your characters as relatable as possible. It is also a good idea to give them a great backstory.
  1. Persuasive Writing

Persuasive writing is a form of writing specifically designed to persuade readers to believe in an idea or as a call to action. This form of writing is usually used in certain writing formats such as book reviews, critics, reaction papers, editorials, proposals, advertisements and brochures.

Persuasive Writing Tips

  • When it comes to persuasive writing, your main objective is to provide your readers with overall proof of the validity of your idea. So it is very important that you provide readers with the needed facts, statistic, statements and other references to establish credibility with your readers.
  • Make sure to cite your sources. Make your sources as varied as possible. This will make your writing more well-rounded and comprehensive.
  • Do your research as thoroughly as possible. Make sure that your sources are concrete and relevant. Remember that your main goal is to persuade your readers to believe in a certain idea. So you should make sure that all your references are as trustworthy as possible.
