6 Essential Tips to Improving Your Sentence Flow!

By Michael Spelling

6 tips to improve sentence flow

Becoming a truly proficient and professional writer does not really happen overnight. It is done through years of practice and hard work. One such aspect of the writing process that you should really take into account is proper sentence flow.

This is because the better your sentence flow, the more effective your writing will be. It will also make your writing easier to read. So before you even think of writing a book or writing professionally, it is imperative that you improve your sentence flow.

Here are 6 essential tips to improving your sentence flow:

  1. Write in shorter and more concise sentences

If there’s one thing that most readers hate, it is overly long sentences. Although there are some instances wherein long sentences are ok, they are usually frowned upon. This is because overly long sentences tend to muck up the sentence flow.

So if you want your writing to be as efficient as possible, you should stick to short and concise sentence composition. This will allow you to write in a clearer and more effective manner.

  1. Read your work aloud

One effective way on how to make sentences flow better, is to read your work aloud. Writing can be very intense and detailed work. And there will be times that you will think a sentence composition is ok.

But when read aloud, sounds awkward and strained. So it is imperative that you read your work aloud consistently. This will also enable you to spot any errors in your work and allow you to make the necessary changes.

Aside from spotting errors, reading your work aloud will help you hear the rhythm of your speech and enable you to make improvements on your writing style, should you feel it is necessary.

  1. Avoid using unnecessary jargon

Yet another way to improve your sentence flow is to avoid using unnecessary jargon. Jargons are highly specific words or expressions that are used by a particular profession or group.

It is best to avoid unnecessary jargon because not everyone knows what they mean, and can cause confusion with some readers. Although it is ok to use jargon if it truly necessary in your sentence composition.

But if you are just using jargon to make your writing sound more officious and intellectual, then do yourself a favor and don’t do it. You will only end up alienating and annoying your readers.

  1. Avoid using filler words

Every writer has used filler words at least once in their writing career. And in truth, using filler words and phrases can be quite tempting because it can add color and character to your writing.

But you should never sacrifice the quality of your sentence flow, just to make your writing sound fancy. Instead, try to follow Ernest Hemingway’s philosophy on writing. Make it straightforward, strong and concise.

  1. Write like you talk

One of the best ways to improve your sentence flow is to write the same way you speak. This will not only make your writing flow more cohesive and rhythmical, it will also make it sound more realistic. So next time you try to write a book or an article, try writing like you talk.

If you have a favorite word or phrase, use it. If you have a certain speaking quirk or timing try to incorporate that into your work. If you have a story in your life that you feel is interesting or meaningful, share it.

By doing so, you are not only writing, but sharing a piece of yourself with your readers.

  1. Practice is key

You can have a multitude of tips on how to improve your sentence flow. But the real trick to truly perfecting your sentence flow is practice. Plain old practice.

Give yourself the room to make mistakes and find out what makes your writing style different. Don’t rush the process and practice, practice and practice some more. This will allow you to find out your writing mistakes and grow as a writer.
