Find Your Very Own Writing Voice with These Great Tips!

Being a writer can be a tough prospect. This is because there are a multitude of other writers that you will have to compete with. And if you want to stand out you will have to be able to offer something that is truly unique.

One great way to do this, is to develop your very own writing voice. With a writing voice of your very own, you will be able to truly distinguish yourself from other writers. But this is easier said than done.

Because it takes a great deal of time and practice before you could really come up with a coherent writing voice.

Here are some great tips on how to find your writing voice:

  1. Know who you’re writing for

If you want to come up with a writing voice of your very own, you should first know who you are writing for. This will not only make the writing process a lot more simple but it will also give you a clarity of purpose. So before you even start your writing sessions you should ask yourself.

Who am I writing for? Who are my target audience? How will I cultivate a writing voice that can truly reach and enamor them? By asking these kinds of questions you will be able to start your search for a writing voice with a renewed sense of purpose.

  1. Read as much as you can

If you want to write a truly unique writing voice, you will have to expose yourself to as many literary influences as you can. So you should be as wide a reader as possible. Make it a habit to read something new on a daily basis.

It can be a new book, an article or a poem. Of course you don’t really have to finish reading a whole book every day. What’s important is that you expose yourself to these influences and use them as inspiration for your own writing voice.

  1. Don’t limit yourself to just one genre

As it was stated earlier, you should read as much as you can. And in the process expose yourself to as many literary influences as possible. But aside from that, it is also important that you don’t limit yourself to just one genre.

When you read books or poems, try to read as many books in as many genres as possible. When you write, you should also be adventurous enough to write in as many genres as possible. By doing so, you are expanding your repertoire and experience as a writer.

  1. Join writing communities

Being a writer can get lonely in the long run, and you will definitely need a lot of support and advice if you want to come up with a writing voice. This is why it is always a good idea to join up with writing communities. By joining a writing community, you will have access to great advice and much more importantly support from fellow writers.

You can also share your work with like-minded authors and get great writing advice from them. And seeing as there are multitude of online writing communities out there, you can choose the best ones that suit you. All in all, joining a writing community is a great way to find your writing voice.

  1. Take your time with it

If you want to come up with a truly unique writing voice, it is important that you don’t rush it. Remember that you will have to contend with a multitude of other writers. And your perspective readers would most likely have read hundreds of books before yours.

So it is important that you take it nice and slow. Take the time to practice your writing and try out various writing styles. Buckle down and fully focus on the task at hand. Only by doing so can you find your writing voice.
